Solid Waste Collection

In an effort to maintain the neat appearance of the Town, Ramseur’s Public Works employees make regular rounds to pick up items left at the road. Tree limbs, shrubbery cuttings, leaves, and other yard waste which is not produced by tree or landscape contractors should be neatly stacked and separated by type of refuse. Leaves must be placed in clear plastic bags except between October 25 and January 25 when the vacuum leaf collection truck is in operation. During that time, leaves must be placed within 7 feet of the edge of the pavement. The Town charges a fee of $25.00 ($100.00 for Commercial including Apartments) per pick up for items placed at the road for removal. No items will be picked up from vacant lots. For more specific information, download the Town’s Solid Waste Collection Practices policy.

Trash is collected each Friday morning and should be at the curb for collection before 6:00 a.m. and container pulled to the back of the residence or business after pick up. For questions regarding household garbage collection, contact us at 336-824-8530

Water and Sewer

Ramseur’s Public Works Director oversees the Town’s water treatment and distribution system, as well as wastewater collection and treatment. Located on Highway 22N across from the Town’s reservoir, Ramseur’s Water Treatment Plant treats an average of 450,000 gallons daily and has the capacity to treat up to 1.5 million. Water is pumped from the treatment facility into the Town’s two elevated water tanks and then distributed to customers in Ramseur, Franklinville, and Coleridge. The Town of Ramseur alone maintains 45 miles of water distribution lines.

In an effort to comply with State and federal regulations and to maintain the safety of the water distribution system, the Town of Ramseur has adopted a Backflow Prevention Ordinance, a copy of which is available under Forms & Documents.

The Town’s Wastewater Treatment Plant is located on Roundleaf Road and serves residents in the Town. The plant processes an average of 100,000 gallons of wastewater daily and has the capacity to treat up to 480,000 gallons daily. The Public Works Department maintains 37 miles of wastewater collection lines and ten area pump stations.

In addition to line maintenance, the Town of Ramseur is responsible for tapping lines to provide service to new customers.

Help Prevent Sewer Backups.

Most backups of the sanitary sewer system occur between the home and the sewer main. The following tips can help prevent costly and unsanitary backups.

DO

  • Dispose of excess grease or cooking oil in the garbage, not down the drain. As grease cools, it solidifies and can cause blockage in the lines.
  • Dispose of food scraps in the garbage or compost pile.
  • Place a wastebasket in the bathroom to dispose of waste products such as diapers, baby wipes, tissue, and feminine hygiene products. Toilet paper is specifically designed to deteriorate quickly and is the only paper product which should be placed down a drain.
  • Consider contacting a plumber for professional advice regarding installation of a backflow prevention device.

DO NOT

  • Pour grease or cooking fats down the drain.
  • Use the toilet as a wastebasket.
  • Plant shrubs or trees near the sewer line. Roots seeking a water source can easily penetrate cracked sewer lines, eventually creating a mass of roots which can block sewer flow.
  • Connect downspouts, sump pumps, French drains, or other drainage sources into the sanitary sewer system. Not only is this practice illegal, but it can overwhelm the treatment system and introduce silt and other debris which can result in clogged lines.
